God’s Money Changing Hands

TODAY’S THOUGHT: “Your abundance at the present time should supply their need, so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness,” 2 Corinthians 8:14.

During one of our neediest times years ago, our pastor came forward to pay our rent after my husband had quit his job.

When his employer started expecting unethical things, we decided that we’d rather remain true to our conscience and to God’s Word than to take underhanded earnings. Even if it meant facing want and need. And we felt confident that God would provide. Yet we soon found ourselves unable to even pay the rent.

And that’s when our pastor stepped forward to pay it for us. Knowing they weren’t well-off, especially with 6 kids, we tried to talk him out of it. But he insisted. “It’s just God’s money going from my hand to yours,” he said.

That was our first experience with such great Christian generosity in action. And it changed our hearts in a profound way. The deep truth behind that act has spoken to us through the years and still speaks today. “It’s not ours, but God’s to send where he wishes and to use as sees fit.”

1 Corinthians 8:1-15 is a call to the Corinthians to take part in sending aid to the critically poor saints in Jerusalem. “Give,” he said, “for by our care of each other we show how genuine our love is. And demonstrate that we are God’s children following in his footsteps.”

Because generous giving and practical caring show the true heart of the Gospel.

It started with God giving his Son and Christ giving his life on the cross. And continues still through his ongoing care of his own. God delights in blessing us and seeing us enjoy those blessings. But he also wants us to share them, so that our abundance may bless others.

When God sent the manna in the wilderness, each had just what he needed. When Christ fed the thousands, they all ate and were satisfied. And they gathered up the leftovers, so that blessing from God’s hand could pass on to other hands.

Seeing our money and all that we have as blessings straight from God’s hands changed everything for us.

For we saw that all we have belongs to God. It simply changed from his hands to ours.

He blesses abundantly, and continues to bless abundantly, because he delights in meeting our needs. But also because he wants us to learn the blessedness of passing HIS abundant blessings on to others!

Who can you bless today?
